Be the Change! Challenge Programme

For Primary Schools we offer the Sustainable Lifestyle Challenge

Inspiring young people (aged 8-12) to look at the way they live and challenge them to change their habits to create a more sustainable lifestyle for themselves. We work in schools in a 3 step process.

How it works

1. Planning

We discuss the particular needs and challenges of your school, and offer workshops on Waste and Lunchboxes, Fairtrade, Ecological Footprints, Energy or Climate Change. You decide which activity we will do for our Main Visit.

2. Main Visit: Setting the Challenge

Following the one hour workshops given by young international volunteers on the chosen topic we introduce the Lifestyle Contract where children are invited to do 5 simple actions for a month:

eg: I will turn off the lights when I leave the room. I will turn off the taps while I clean my teeth etc.

Pupils are also invited to create their own additional pledges either personally or as a class.

Pupils take contracts home and tick the pledges daily when they have completed the action.

3. Follow-up Visit: From School to Home

After a month we deliver a follow up workshop, during which the class discusses what impact it made on their family and which pledge in particular will become a habit.

Rewards

Those who have completed the month will be awarded Certificates. Made out of recycled paper from the Paper Mill of course!

Cost

The cost is normally £150 per day. However from October 2008 – June 2009 we have sponsorship to visit 15 schools within a 30 mile radius of Royston, Herts. We will only ask for £30 travel expenses..

For Secondary School pupils we offer the Ambassador Programme

Empowering young people to be the change and educate their peers or younger pupils on the issue of sustainability.

How it works

Training

Peace Child provides a day's training for a group of between 10-20 committed young people of 13 years old and above.

* They learn more about the chosen issue

* Learn presentational skills

* See examples of how to run easily replicable workshops

* Are encouraged to be creative and come up with their own ideas.

Follow up support

Peace Child will provide on- going advisory sessions to help them to deliver and report on their workshops.

An Ambassador is trained so that they can introduce the Be The Change Challenge to others through workshops, games and presentations.

They can either give workshops in their feeder primary schools or and space to allow them to come up with creative ideas to put the lead sessions for younger pupils in their school

Rewards

An Ambassador learns:

  •     How to live sustainably/consume less
  •     Training in public speaking
  •     Encouragement to be creative
  •     Experience in leading classroom sessions
  •     Confidence in speaking in front of others
  •     Skills that can be adapted for other programmes.
  •     This experience looks good on the CV. Colleges and employers welcome these key skills
  •     After 5 presentations they get a Peace Child Ambassador certificate.
